Influencing factor of Household decision-making




The Role of the women in their household decision is very important of the family. Many factors play a significant role in women’s decision making in each and same influencing factor are different. Women, major influencing factor of household decision-making and education, socio-economic status, social norms, values and traditional, socio-employment situation, caste system, the right of property, empowerment opportunity, awareness, legal provision and socio-physical infrastructure. Influencing factors directly or indirectly determine the roles of women’s decision making and some of them play a key role and some factors play secondary roles. Some these factors that education, property right, family’s role, awareness, legal provision and opportunity as the main influencing factors of women role in decision-making education.

Education is the main influencing factors of women’ role in decision-making. Education is one of the factors to make the people capable. In the Nepalese society, many women’s are illiterate. Education status of the women in the study is very backward. Lack of education, women’s decision-making power.

Social Norm’s values and traditional status 
In the study area, biggest numbers of people are Hindu. Hindu religion believes on the social norms values and traditional. Besides, the social norms and values are also guided by patriarchal principle. Women role in both Hindu and Muslim is dominated by these norms, values and traditional. In the study, many respondents are Hindu religion. Hindu and Muslim women are following the traditional, social norms and values. This social norms values and traditional an influencing factor of women’s decision-making role. In the household survey to respondent say that social norms, values and traditional play the secondary role.

Caste System
Nepal is “Char jaat chatish barna ko pulbari” there are many castes and ethnicities staying here. Caste system also determines the women’s status in the family as well as the society. The women’s decision-making power of Tharu, Dalit, each higher than Brahmin and Chhetri. In the study area, Muslim women have not freedom than other caste women. A Caste system is influencing factor of women decision-making the role.

Say that caste system play the secondary role or household decision-making process.

Socio-economic status
In this study area, socio-economic status of the family of the respondent is no so higher. In the patriarchal society, the women social economy status is low. Brahmin and Chhetri family have high social status. Status of Dalit, Muslim family have low status in the society. Generally, women economic status of the family is low, they dependent of the family likewise mostly women of the families do not dong the job and another income source of in field study.

The Family sat that social economic status plays the secondary role of the household decision-making process.

Family role
Male members dominated in each and every decision of the family then female’s power become low. In the study Brahmin and Chhetri family have high domination Newar and Thakuri family have the middle role of the family household decision-making process. The household survey says that Muslim women of the family household decision process are very low. So family’s positive role enhances the women power in household decision making. In the study area, 14 respondent (i.e. 23.33%) family say that family role plays the main and 46 respondents (i.e. 76.67% family). Say that family role play the secondary role of the decision-making process.

Legal Provision
By the legal provision, females can get the change to be more inside as well as outside of household the women have the women right e.g. rights to property, a right to production, rights to schooling, a right to participation on developing, etc. Then they get an opportunity to enhance the decision-making capability. The women right in the field study 23 respondents (i.e. 38.33%) family say that legal provision play the main role and 37 respondents (i.e. 62.67%) family say that legal provision plays the secondary role of the women household decision-making, So that legal provision is one of the major influencing factors of women’s decision making in household.

Awareness
Women role in household decision making also dependents upon the awareness. The people become awareness they economic the women to enhance here role in household decision making otherwise they don’t play attention about women’s role decision making. The NGOs/INGOs and government have awareness about the role of women in household decision-making process in target women absence of awareness plays the vital role. In the field study out of the total 60 respondents, 42 respondents (i.e 70%) family member say that awareness the main role (vital role) and 18 respondents (i.e. 30%) family member say that awareness plays the secondary role of the household decision making. So that awareness is one of the major influencing factors of women decision making in a household.

Employment Situation
The employment situation also influencing the women’s role in household decision making the male dominated society many women are unemployment because the society doesn’t promise to work outside the family. In the women outside the high earning jobs than they have more powerful expense her earning. They get more power to make the decision in the family. In the study area, only four respondents are service holders, of the government, only six women are business shop leaders. Similarly, 40 respondents are engaged of labor or tradition occupation. This situation indicates that employment situation of most of the women is not good in the study area, 60 respondents (i.e. 100%) family member say that employment situation plays the secondary role of women household decision making.

Right of property
In the Nepalese society, the rights of the male member of the family. Some family has ownership of Lands but don’t have complete authority to mobilize it. In the study area, some women have also the ownership of land but, they have not complete authority so that there are not the nominal holder. This situation indicates that women are very weak of property and right. Out of total 60 respondents, 10 respondents (i.e. 16.67%) family women say that right of property play the main role of women household decision and 50 respondent (i.e. 83.33%) family women say that right of property play the secondary role of women household decision. So that the right of property is one of the influencing factors of women decision making in household.

Space opportunity
The opportunity of the women is the very important role in decision making. In the dominate society, the male member does not have given to the women making decision very field. In the study area, the women situation is very weak there are no. of opportunity for women to work and role of decision making in the family. Therefore more opportunity is given then women’s role would be enhanced in decision making and vice versa out of 60 respondents 13 respondents (i.e. 21.67%) family say that opportunity play the main role and 47 respondents (i.e. 78.33%) family member say that opportunity plays the secondary role of women household decision making. So that the opportunity is one of the major influencing factor of household decision making process.
